DOSHELP is contained in a self-extracting archive called MAKEHELP.EXE.
These files are produced when MAKEHELP is run:
DOSHELP EXE 57543 - Main DOSHELP program
DOSHELP DAT 90367 - DOSHELP data file containing DOS info.
SEE COM 958 - File browse program. ("SEE FILENAME")
INTRO BAT 15 - "SEE INTRO.TXT", brings up this file.
SPEED BAT 70 - Batch file to speed up AT keyboards.
QUICKEYS COM 272 - Program that speeds up PC/XT keyboards.
INTRO TXT 4640 - This introduction to DOSHELP.
DOSHELP provides an MS-DOS help facility designed to be of use to
beginner and expert alike. Features include:
■ A main menu leading to information on eighty-eight DOS topics.
Topics include DOS commands and key usage, piping, filters,
redirection, device names, wildcards, key and character code
tables, and DOS versions. Numerous concrete command examples
are included in the text.
■ The ability to export text for display above the DOS prompt.
■ Light-bar menus at the bottom of each topic screen that lead
directly to related topics.
■ Context-sensitive help that can be called from any screen.
■ Parameters to set COLORS, SEARCH PATH, and QUIET KEYBOARD
(Mouse On/Off). A menu that displays instructions and the
current parameter settings is available by typing DOSHELP ?
at the DOS prompt. ~~~~~~~~~
■ Mouse support for Microsoft(tm) compatible mice.
───────────────── GETTING HELP IN DOSHELP ─────────────────
DOSHELP is very easy to use and doesn't require much help.
DOSHELP has an introduction that explains how to use the
program. Take a minute to read this material when you first
enter DOSHELP. Instructions can also be called up as HELP
from any screen in the program by pressing the F1 key.
──────────────────── DOSHELP PARAMETERS ───────────────────
DOSHELP can be controlled in several ways by information
that follows it on the DOS command line. These pieces of
information are called parameters. DOSHELP parameters are:
DOSHELP /P DRIVE:\PATH (disk path)
DOSHELP /C COLOR VALUES (10 digits)
DOSHELP /Q QUIET KEYBOARD (ON or OFF)
(/Q shuts off a Mouse when ON.)
─────── DOSHELP PARAMETER MENU: DOSHELP ? ───────
~~~~~~~~~
Enter "DOSHELP ?" at the DOS prompt to bring up the DOSHELP
parameter menu. This menu provides intructions for using the
parameters and reports on the parameter values currently set.
────────────────────── KEYBOARD NOTES ──────────────────────
The DOSHELP menus works as fast as the keyboard repeat rate.
Files named SPEED.BAT and QUICKEYS.COM have been included in
the original archived version of DOSHELP to help you speed
your keyboard up.
SPEED.BAT speeds up keyboards on AT type machines. SPEED.BAT
needs to work with the DOS DEBUG program - so make certain it
can find DEBUG.COM! QUICKEYS.COM speeds up PC/XT keyboards.
QUICKEYS can be run more than once for even faster results.
If you like these files include them in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file to speed up the keyboard whenever your PC is turned on.
SPECIAL NOTE ON 12 FUNCTION KEY KEYBOARDS: DOSHELP beeps on
some keyboards with 12 function keys when the "inverted T"
cursor keys are used. To avoid this, use the numeric keypad
cursor keys instead, or use the DOSHELP /Q parameter by
entering DOSHELP /Q ON at the DOS prompt.
──────────────────────── DISK NOTES ─────────────────────────
DOSHELP takes up less than 150K of disk space
and uses about 130K of memory. It is not memory resident.
The sole purpose of MAKEHELP.EXE is to "uncrate" DOSHELP and
several ancillary files. You can save space on your disk by
deleting MAKEHELP.EXE after it creates DOSHELP.
DOSHELP actually consists of the DOSHELP.EXE and DOSHELP.DAT
files. Copy these files to install DOSHELP on another drive.
In order to run the program from any location, make sure
that DOSHELP.EXE is on the system's search PATH. You can
view this PATH by typing "PATH" at the DOS prompt.
DOSHELP.EXE reads information on disk from DOSHELP.DAT. This
process is quite fast on a hard disk but you may experience a
slight lag when reading from a floppy disk drive.
DOSHELP always finds DOSHELP.DAT if they are located in the
same directory. If a problem occurs, use the /P parameter to
tell DOSHELP where to find DOSHELP.DAT.
